I'm an
Individual
My name is Jessica. For the past 12 years I have been tutoring, teaching and coaching various populations who struggle with American English, reading comprehension, writing, speech, pronunciation, ESL and learning disabilities. I received my undergrad degree from The George Washington University in Psychology, Masters from John Hopkins in Clinical Counseling and just received my (TEFL) teaching certificate from Georgetown University. In addition, I worked for companies like T-mobile, Food and Drug Administration, Social Security Administration, World Bank and many more. I enjoy tutoring students and helping them build confidence in their ability to achieve and overcome obstacles. My background allows me to use certain techniques that can enhance effectiveness in order to get the most benefit from our work together. My goal is to improve our students confidence, speech, pronunciation, ESL, reading fluency, writing, reading comprehension, decoding & encoding, executive functioning skills, test taking & note taking, focus & organization and auditory processing, motivation and study strategies Courses are held online and in person from 9:00AM-8:00PM, Sunday through Friday to both groups and individuals. Packages and pricing vary depending on the specific needs, program and number of sessions. ONLINE COURSES Online courses are taught using both Skype and Adobe Connect. The live platform allows us to provide audio and visual interaction, as well as to share instruction materials including documents, PowerPoints and videos. Using this live program, we can create an individual experience for each student, and you can receive personal attention during your online classes. Each class we teach focuses on one area at a time, so that you get comprehensive lessons in a specific subject. Sessions mostly take place online with an experienced and credentialed coach/tutor who is knowledgeable and experienced in the area of need. The student tutor/coach matching process is based on individual needs and the outcome of the initial assessment. We begin with an assessment of each student to determine his or her strengths and weaknesses and the most appropriate methods. We then put together a diagnostic and prescriptive learning plan. We integrate hands-on techniques for ESL learners, language-based learning disabilities as well as specific strategies for executive functioning and auditory processing. Some of the skills that we cover include: Intonation Speech/accent reduction Vocabulary Pronunciation reading fluency writing reading comprehension decoding & encoding executive functioning skills summarizing test taking & note taking focus & organization auditory processing motivation study strategies The current 6 week course being offered is 18-hours total. Over the course of 6 weeks you will meet with you tutor/coach for twelve 90 minute sessions. Students are required to meet with their coach 2x per week. This course will help you learn the correct way to pronounce vowels and consonants so you are speaking clearly. American Cultural Immersion focuses on the specifics of pronunciation improvement while expanding vocabulary and cultural awareness through discussion and text. Drawing on cultural associations, personal values and past experience, we explore the unique nature of North American business and social settings. How long does it take? Changing an accent is not an easy task. At ACI, we approach accent modification with proven strategies, valuable exercises and compassion. We identify and first help you to correct your most serious pronunciation errors, moving on to refine other details of elocution as desired by the client. The time that pronunciation training takes depends upon a variety of factors -- the original degree of pronunciation difficulty, student motivation, innate ability with language, ability to focus and the degree of interaction within English-speaking environments. Remember that many internationally educated professionals have been speaking English for much of their lives. Similar to learning an instrument, it takes time to learn, use and establish new patterns. What are some of the areas we might focus on? Individual vowels, consonants & consonant clusters Syllable & sentence stress Intonation -- the melody of the language Rhythm -- the combination of stress, phrasing & intonation Connected speech -- blending, joining and dropping of sounds Tone & volume rhythm in American English. Private instruction is the most customized option. Master all the consonants and vowels of English. Sound clearer and more polished. Learn the correct pronunciation of professional words that you use every day at work. Learn solutions to advanced problems in English pronunciation (special variations in saying [t], [d], [l], and many other sounds). Link your words for smooth, natural communication. Go up and down with your voice like fluent English speakers. Increase your proficiency through engaging learning activities (reading aloud, conversation, role playing, short presentations). Hear your improvement. What is included in private instruction? Pre-test to set your goals. Print-out of your personalized speech analysis. All practice materials, including CD-ROM program, text book, and customized recordings. Post-test so you can see your excellent progress! Number of sessions and pricing varies.
