Tutor in Solon, Ohio

I'm an
Individual
Hello, I am a second year Dental Student at Case Western Reserve University, and am a recent graduate of the University of Michigan (major in Cell & Molecular Biology). After my sophomore year of high school, I took an ACT course offered by the Princeton Review and subsequently scored in the 99th percentile on the ACT the following March. I have tutored numerous high school students in Math (pre-algebra, algebra I & II, geometry, and pre-calculus), Science (bio/chem/physics) as well as on all sections of the ACT test. I have seen the best results (an average of 4 points higher) in my students' math, english, and science scores, and have seen good results (2-4 points higher) in the reading comprehension section. I am located in Solon and will therefore be offering tutoring, at a rate of $30/hr, anywhere in the Solon/Orange/Beachwood area (local libraries, coffee shops, schools, or student's house). If you are looking for a more affordable alternative to corporate ACT tutoring, feel free to contact me before spending thousands of dollars on Princeton Review or Kaplan courses. I recommend a 1 hour allotment to tutoring, but I am flexible and will do a shorter or longer session upon request (at the same rate). I am young enough (22 years) to be able to relate to how high school students think, and can connect with them on a deeper level than most tenured tutors/teachers, and at the same time, am mature enough to be able to implement the most strategic and correct way to go about taking the test. I have retained all the strategies taught in the Princeton Review course and will be able to apply them to the tutoring sessions. In dental school we are now taught to give full comprehensive care - treating the whole patient instead of just the mouth. This has given me another perspective on my tutoring. I like to get to know my students so that I can better understand how they think, and therefore give them a more specific tutoring session catered to their individuality. Here's an example of how I solve problems (student's coming to an incorrect answer) in tutoring scenarios: I first address the problem to the student and ask them why they chose the answer or the problem-solving strategy they chose to implement. Usually, I can quickly understand what they were thinking, and then I present the underlying concept to them in a relatable way. If I think they understand the concept, I give them another question analogous to the question they answered incorrectly. If they are able to answer it correctly, we move on. If they are not, I re-explain the concept and give more examples until the student truly understands. I will keep track of concepts that the student missed and frequently refer back to them throughout the session, this will lead to better retention. If wanted, I will supply a short analysis of the tutoring session to the parent in order to aid the student in self-study at home. I have experience in working with adolescents that have mental disadvantages such as ADD, ADHD, poor concentration/motivation. I strive to cater to every student's individual needs. I am the most available on weekends, but am also available in the evenings on some school days. Feel free to contact me by email/text/phone with any questions or concerns. Thanks! Sam
