I'm an
Individual
Susannah grew up devouring books and loving language. While studying at Wesleyan University, Susannah tutored ESL and creative writing at a local soup kitchen. She also studied abroad in Perú, Argentina, and Spain, where, steeped in the language, she perfected her Spanish. After graduating with high honors and a BA in history, Susannah returned to Argentina as soon as she could. For several months she lived in Buenos Aires, where she tutored ESL to bankers and lawyers, translated books of poetry and short stories, worked on personal writing projects, and savored succulent steaks. Upon returning, Susannah started work as an editorial and communications intern at Words without Borders, an online literary magazine featuring international literature in translation. She is a published writer and is currently working at Archipelago Books, a small, independent press that specializes in literature in translation. Susannah’s greatest role models throughout her life have always been her teachers—both inside and outside of the classroom. They taught her that learning is a full-time and life-long endeavor that everyone engages with differently. With this in mind, Susannah makes an effort to get to know each student as a holistic individual with distinct strengths and learning styles. She has worked with children, teens, and adults in both group and individual settings and custom-tailors each session, finding materials, methods, and real-life examples that fit every student’s needs and interests. A long-time lover of jazz, Susannah brings the same creative energy to teaching: she listens carefully, gets in tune with her students, and is open to adapting and improvising when a good opportunity for learning presents itself. This method, she finds, establishes trust and invites question-asking and critical-thinking. She gives students the tools to track their goals and growth in order to build organizational skills and the confidence they need to take risks in their learning. Through her collaborative, creative, and open approach, Susannah helps her students get to know themselves as learners and to take their curiosity with them wherever they go.
