I am a retired teacher with a Masters in teaching. I have a BA in history/political science and a minor in English. I taught high school for over ten years and have worked in both middle and elementary school. I am most comfortable with the following: any basic high school social studies subject; AP history; any basic high school English curriculum; basic high school math through algebra I; elementary and middle school English, reading, and math. I have done individual and group tutoring in the schools as well as private tutoring. I believe in teaching the "basics" using very traditional approaches because I believe them to be the most effective. I believe that an understanding of basic skills will allow progress and success under any teaching system. I have worked with difficult and frustrated students as well as students with special needs and the gifted. I believe that each student can find joy in learning and be very successful. Each student has a unique style, but all students need and require patience. I also believe mastery requires effort and persistence which each student is capable of. Positive reinforcement and encouragement, as well as high expectations, are also important components of success.
