As a native Chinese speaker, I used to teach Chinese to secondary school and college students in Thailand. I usually start my teaching with Pinyin and intonation, which is the easiest way for learners to acquire spoken Chinese. Then students are taught how to write Chinese characters and learn words and phrases. Chinese idioms are integrated into my teaching to help students learn the language while understanding the Chinese culture and values. As the student's Chinese proficiency develops, s/he will be able to converse in Chinese and write down simple sentences and even paragraphs.
