Tutor in Burlington, Vermont

I'm an
Individual
Hello, my name is Lauren. I am currently attending graduate school in Burlington, Vermont and I have a Bachelor's degree in history and German from the University of Maryland. . I am very passionate about both learning and teaching. I specialize in teaching English writing, reading, spelling, and grammar. I am also very skilled in teaching all areas of history. Based on my educational and professional background and extensive knowledge of history and English, I am considered to be extremely qualified to teach and tutor. My qualifications for the role of tutor include a current position as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Vermont where I regularly lead class discussions and help students with their writing and reading, “hands on” teaching experiences in a professional setting, an ability to effectively communicate facts and proceedings, and strong writing, reading and editing skills. I also have 1 and a half years of tutoring experience in the Elementary and middle school levels in English, including reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, homework help, and pronunciation. I have also tutored college aged students in history. I am great at editing, proofreading, formatting papers, checking spelling and grammar, and analyzing historical research and assignments. I have always excelled in communicating, especially writing and reading. I have consistently earned A grades in upper level college courses in English and have earned very high marks on all essays and research papers. I earned a 5.5 out of 6 on the writing section of the GRE. Last year I was nominated for best graduate essay at the University of Vermont. I am also a contributor to two forthcoming publications. Since I am currently a full time graduate student, tutoring allows me to continue my passion for teaching others while maintaining a flexible schedule and hours. Several past experiences have given me skills to help me excel as a tutor, including two internships at historical museums, an internship with a State Senator, and and assisting at a History Day Competition for students. In my first internship at a history museum in Stuttgart, Germany, I assisted in the education department. I helped coordinate and implement educational programs for visiting school groups. This involved planning activities and projects as well as carrying out educational lessons. In my position as an AmeriCorps VISTA with the Jewish Social Service Agency’s (JSSA) Holocaust Survivor Program, I regularly planned and led training workshops and community education programs. I trained home care agencies, including nurses, homemakers and caregivers, on how to care for Holocaust survivors. Designing, developing and presenting these programs and workshops helped me develop critical leadership skills as well as invaluable experience in teaching and planning programs and lessons. Being a tutor allows me to share my skills and expertise in history, reading, writing, and English with those who are struggling and need assistance. I am very patient, understanding, and good at working with others. I am also very easy-going, friendly, and accessible to students. I'd love to help in any way I can. I am open to all ages and skill levels and will come to you, either at your home or meet you in a public setting! I plan all lessons ahead of time and assign homework for students to continue practicing skills before our next meeting. Feel free to contact me with any questions!
