Tutor in Dover, New Hampshire

I have spent eight years working as a mechanical engineer in a professional setting, working on Research and Development for everything from Navy helicopter applications to prosthetic device designs. In addition, I've spent six years working with middle school and high school students as a soccer and track coach, and four years volunteering with a mentoring program working with students in the local schools. I also have experience as a science teacher for local homeschool students. I specialize in physics and upper level math classes, but am also well-qualified to tutor in writing (both creative and technical) and literature. I like to challenge my students to understand the real-life applications of the topics they are studying, especially those math and physics concepts that can get bogged down in memorized equations and complicated theorems. A number of my athletes who have received impromptu explanations of lever arms, acceleration, and centers of gravity would likely be quick to attest to the fact that I am fascinated by the way aspects of math and science interact with so many other areas of life. Sports. Music. Sewing (you might be surprised how many seamstresses and quilters have a better innate understanding of geometry than many of my fellow engineers). I love trying to instill those unexpected connections and that fascination into the students that I work with. I believe I'm especially well-equipped to work with students specifically aiming to study engineering in the future, but would love to work with any student hoping to better understand the world around them through these subjects.
