I had a math teacher in middle school who would write math riddles on the whiteboard. Once a week, he’d give candy to the people who’d solve his riddles and I once solved a riddle. Looking back, riddles were a great way to get me engaged in math. It showed me that math can be used in other contexts. It can be fun. In a similar manner, I would like to use riddles to get my students engaged. A good short language lesson would be one that uses riddles (and, to a larger degree, stories). They would help people understand pronunciation. For example, I would use a riddle like, ‘What English word retains the same pronunciation, even after you take away four of its five letters?’ Answer: Queue. By doing this, I would show to people that, although ‘Q’ is a letter, the sound it makes (/k/ /w/) is a word.
