I graduated MA Musicology with teacher credential in Music and Cultural Studies this past August. I have experience teaching School Music and Cultural Studies as well as English as a Second Language. I have been teaching English as a Second Language to students ranging from ages 16 to 25 while I was still living in the Netherlands. Being Dutch living in the USA I've acquired almost accent-less fluency in English as a second language. I've got a problem solving mindset and I am determined to provide individual solutions to a wide variety of (educational)  issues. I am determined to improve (public) education to ensure No Child Left Behind really leaves no child behind by creating, implementing and using  student-centered and interdisciplinary curricula. I'm focused on developing the student’s talents and interests and use those to help the student find their place in society. I am convinced that life is a never ending learning experience. Research has shown that the vast majority of what high school students learn while in high school is acquired out of the classroom. The current educational system is massively outdated, originating in Western Europe about two centuries ago. Back then governments required great amounts of people capable or reading, writing and arithmetic to do their government clerical jobs. We added a couple of subjects our students' general development, but the way we teach is still the same as it was way back in the day. For some reason schools are very afraid to use technology and current (cognitive) research to improve the learning conditions in classrooms. I strive to make that difference where possible by utilizing technology, current research on teaching practices and developing personalized and interdisciplinary curricula to bridge the gap between the educational system the expectations of society of a student leaving school.
