I'm an
Individual
Hello! My name is Peter Chen and I'm a second year Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of British Columbia. I currently live in Kitsilano and am looking for part-time tutoring work to fund my education. About my academics: I went to South Delta Secondary school and was in honours maths from grade 9-11. Then in grade 12, I took double maths blocks, meaning I learned pre-calculus and calculus at the same time. I finished the year with a core grade average of 91%. In first year university, I took maths 184 and finished the year with 84% in the course. I received a grade average of 78% for the year, taking courses such as economics, visual media, philosophy, computer science, and mandarin. A full transcript can be made available. I also passed level 7 in the Royal Conservatory of Music in grade 11 as well as level 1 theory, and have been playing for joy since. My knowledge of the piano would be perfect for entry level piano players who don't want to jump right into RCM, or pay for an expensive professional teacher, but rather discover the fun of music. About my Physical Education: I have consistently skied since I was 5, totaling 14 years on the slopes. I played soccer from age 6 to age 18, during that time playing at high levels and for my high school, winning provincial championships at age 12, and district cup in grade 10. I played rugby for 3 years from grade 10 to 12 and loved the game. I started Shotokan karate in grade 8, moved into mixed martial arts, and won gold at Tiger Balm International in 2013 in the mixed martial arts division. My climbing experience spans back to grade 12, when I first went to a bouldering gym. Now I climb consistently, and have much knowledge to share of outdoor route climbing. About my teaching experience: From grades 9-10 I was an assistant piano teacher working with young children. I enjoyed the position and learned many skills that translated to my tutoring position in grade 12. I tutored three peers in younger grades in social studies, sciences, and maths, weekly or every few weeks for the last few months before exams. About me: Outside of academics, I love to spend time outdoors. I love to ski, to climb, to hike, to camp, and everything outdoor related. I am also the Head Media Director of my Undergraduate Social Committee (Sauder Social Committee). Previous extra-curricular accomplishments include being student council president at South Delta Secondary and a Link Leadership student involved in creating school community. I enjoy helping others, and take satisfaction in seeing other peoples improved results with my contributed help. I also believe that the best tutors are not the ones who are the best at maths, because they work in a different way. I think the best tutors are those that have some degree of difficulty with the subject, so they can relate to the process someone who is not good at maths is going through. I believe I can do that, as I am not a total math genius. My goal when tutoring is to be more like a coach, and inspire the one being tutored to make the effort to learn. I can be as patient as needed, but will continually try to present conquerable challenges.
