I'm an
Individual
My name is Tanner Smith and I am currently in my second year at Simon Fraser University in Surrey. In high school at Pacific Academy I completed the International Baccalaureate programme in grades 11 & 12 and received the diploma upon completion. With the recent teacher's strike I understand the struggle parents have in figuring out what to do with their kids during the day, and more importantly, how to keep up their education during their absence from the classroom. Whether it's going through a curriculum or simply practicing skills and reviewing material that has already been learned, kids need exposure to some kind of education, especially with diplomas, scholarships, and university applications on the horizon. As such, I am making myself available for tutoring any age/grade in almost any subject: - Math - English - Social Studies/History - Science (Chemistry & Physics) - French In addition, I will be available for tutoring the following IB courses: - English (HL) - History (HL) - Physics (HL) - Chemistry (SL) - Math (SL) - French (SL) I understand first hand the levels of stress that come with the IB program, and I can only imagine how that is intensified for students who are not in school. It literally takes a natural disaster and sometimes more to halt the IB exams in May, and with so much riding on those exams, students need to be prepared by reviewing and practicing skills that can be lost over the period of a summer. Past IB exams are always available for study purposes along with their answer keys, making them one of the best tools for IB students to use. I will be bringing past exams to tutoring sessions (a technique that IB tutors used for me and helped get through a lot of the studying for the IB exams) as well as my own knowledge and experience of the course. About me: After receiving the IB Diploma I received a number of awards for academic achievement, including two provincial scholarships, the BC Dogwood scholarship, an entrance scholarship to Trinity Western University valued at $7,000, and an entrance scholarship to SFU valued at $12,000. I have taken various courses during my time at SFU, pursuing an interest in communications and business. After three semesters at SFU my CGPA stands at 3.48. My main skills are in english/writing (essay prep, organization, writing, formatting, editing, etc), as well as math, chemistry, and history. In addition, I have completed a criminal record check and have received my First Aid AED-C certification. Availability: As of now, I am available Wednesday to Sunday, while the time of day is up for negotiation and discussion as to what works best for both parties. My availability may change at any given time due to my own course load that may consist of assignment deadlines, midterms/exams, or other requirements, but thankfully my schedule is quite open. I live in Langley so I am able to tutor anywhere in the Langley-Surrey area. I have a vehicle so I am able to drive to meet, pickup, drop off, etc. I also have my class 5 license so I am able to drive more than one passenger at once should the situation demand it. On that note, I am willing to take on more than just 1 student at a time, granted they are at roughly the same education level and can agree on similar tutoring schedules during the week. Lastly, while my main goal is to tutor students who are missing out on their education during the strike, I am a firm believer that breaks from the constant exposure to math problems, essay drafts, or whatever the coursework is are both conducive and necessary to better learning, especially with younger students with shorter attention spans. Thus, depending on the situation and the hours available for tutoring each day, I would be more than willing to take students outside to get away from the work for a while in order to refocus and reenergize. Again, all is up for discussion. Rate: $30/hour (open to some negotiation) Please do not hesitate to email or call/text me at 778-232-... with any questions you may have about tutoring. I hope to make some lives a little easier while at the same time aiding in some students' education however I can.
