PROGRAM: Academic Enrichment and after-school tutoring OBJECTIVES: To increase students’ academic skills by enhancing their intellectual acuity and awareness as well as closing the achievement gap for students functioning at or below grade-level in the areas of language arts, writing, and communication. LOCATION: Chicago, Il SERVICE NEED: In 2002, the face of modern education was reformed with the inception of the No Child Left Behind Act. To date, forty-six states have adopted the Common Core State Standard curriculum commonly found in school districts throughout the continental of United States. Although CCSS are now a staple within the fabric of American education, recent studies continue to reflect inconsistencies in student and adult achievement gaps. As a result, scientific-based research has come into question due to variations in data collection methods supposedly designed to increase functional performance. Fortunately, there are learning strategies and services now available for those facing academic deficiencies in core learning areas OUR MISSION: “Immaculant Educational Consulting provides young scholars, student-athletes, and adults with comprehensive and supplementary academic services that cater to the individual learning and functioning needs. IEC’s enrichment guides mirror and is consistent with most Common Core State Standard-based curriculum requirements.” DESCRIPTION: Immaculant Educational Consulting was founded in 2015 by two former high school special education classroom instructors. Their teaching experience revealed the discrepancies between student academic achievement gaps and curriculum mandates required by general standardized education policies. Many of their students were from low-socioeconomic backgrounds where high-end educational resources needed to function in the general education environment are often not available in spite of the federal mandates indicating all children have the right to a fair and equal opportunity learning experience. Public generalized education focuses on assessment-based teaching that specifically hones in on academic skills commonly associated with Common Core State Standard curriculum expectations. While coined No Child Left Behind, the education act passed in 2001 has continued to enhance the academic skills of students residing in Level I school districts while inefficiently providing access avenues to the students and families who do not. While NCLB is not all to blame for the achievement gap between high and lower-functioning students, IEC does recognize that not all students encompass the same learning modalities or styles and that curriculum guides and implementation strategies should mirror the needs of the individual student and their learning function. As former student-athletes, founders Fiona C. Cross are also looking to support those currently participating in extra-curricular sports by offering after-school tutoring services designed to facilitate a consistent balance between education and athletics. The program, IMMAC-U, is a community-based initiative that will cater to the entire well-being of the student-athlete and their comprehension of the importance of fundamental health and education, and cooperative-learning. Not excluding any child on any academic level, IEC meets students where they are with the hopes of developing the leadership skills in which they all possess.
