Math can be a brutal subject for many students and this is due to the fact that many concepts are abstract, but most students live in a "concrete world", so it's no wonder that many students struggle to understand math at the elementary level. I believe in a hands on approach in which students are manipulating items to determine a pattern, and once this pattern is learned to apply it to another situation. IE, students should not just be given a formula, but should discover the formula through guided practice and then apply this to a unique and novel situation. I have 17 years of elementary teaching experience, from grades 3-5. I believe in patience and instead of telling students what to do, asking them what do they " want to be able to do in math". Based upon their answers I will know what direction to take them.
