A great woman once said that environment is stronger than will. It has been my job as a Montessori teacher to create nurturing environments, both through my interactions with the child, and through meaningful work. In this way, in my experience, it matters at least as much how I approach the child as the work I might bring to them. The engine of the child's behavior, the engine of all our behavior, is self-esteem. Every interaction with a child is a chance to nurture this self-esteem. When self-esteem is high, hurdles seem that much lower. My job then, as a teacher of Montessori, and as your child's potential tutor is to address the whole child, to see their strengths and their individuality, to see things from their perspective, and as much as possible to stand in their shoes as they walk forward to address their challenges. In addition to teaching Montessori I have worked residentially with children and teenagers with special needs, and I design and run wilderness programs for young children. My varied experience and my 20 years of working with children have given me a broad horizon against which to understand the development of the child, and a nuanced sensibility from which to help them approach their own solutions.
