Tutor in Berkeley, California

I'm an
Individual
As an experienced tutor in physics and math with outstanding scores in the International Baccalaureate (IB) and SATs, I am excited to continue tutoring online -or in person when safe and possible- during these uncertain times. I derive satisfaction from helping others in the improvement of their careers, and believe that, especially during a time when most of the world is working remotely and schools are suspended, I can—and want to—help students achieve and exceed their academic goals. Since I graduated from high school, I have been helping students who need extra support in several subjects achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. In courses like science and mathematics, ranging from elementary school to IB exam preparation, I ensure that students understand the basics before attempting more complicated questions. In the past, I have utilized innovative methods of teaching such as the Integrative Science Learning Environment (ISLE), which has been shown to highly engage and motivate students. I am proud to have applied this method in several classroom environments, from substituting chemistry, mathematics, and physics classes in a private school in Spain, to building a solar installation with Khmer students. I have found that this method of teaching allows students to think critically about concepts in STEM and question why something works the way it does. All my students have improved their performance with the help of my tutoring, including one student that increased their grade from an F to a B in a mathematics final within four hours of class. In addition to my teaching experience, I have also been an SAT, CommonApp, and UCAS preparatory tutor for 4 years. In this volunteering position, I have mentored over eight low-income selected Spanish students through the process of college application in foreign countries, guiding them through essay writing and standardized test taking. My most recent student will start college at Brown University in the fall; past students I have worked with have been admitted to other colleges including Northwestern University, the University of Pennsylvania, Imperial College of London, and Harvard University. This mentoring experience has helped me to gain a new perspective in the tutoring role, in which the mentor accompanies the student in a both academic and professional growth journey. I am passionate about helping students improve in all academic subjects, and in transmitting my passion for math and physics to those who could benefit from it. This has translated as a tutor, high school substitute teacher, and sleep-away science camp instructor. Feel free to reach me at [email protected] or at 1(646)81... for questions or to schedule a session!
