I'm an
Individual
As the traditional school year calendar winds down in this anything-but-traditional school year, I can review and reinforce skills learned over the past school year and help students with applications to real-world examples (translate into equations, using real-world situations and mathematical lingo, encourage process displaying and checking results). I have helped students get caught up to grade level performance within the school year, worked with students to instill confidence in their math techniques and recall by matching a scholar's learning strengths to use on those skill-sets, and encouraged students to question processes and make corrections to mine/others' work so they can gain understanding from other perspectives and better verbalize their experience. My work (and volunteering) in southwest Michigan public and private schools enabled me to work with very diverse social and economic communities of students and families. I am sensitive to and discrete about backgrounds, present home and school activities, and goals for the future while encouraging appreciation of our diversity. I have worked with learners who had OCD, ADHD, on the Asperger’s spectrum and/or students who had to move several times in one calendar year, through no fault of their own, sometimes several of each in one class. I chose retirement from teaching after my husband retired from the pharmaceutical industry. I quickly realized I don't like to remain idle and enjoy working with young adults, usually landing among the middle-early high crowd. I have always enjoyed working one-to-one and in small groups. I have tutored neighbors’ kids, kids and parents from other neighborhoods (volunteer programs), and throughout various districts. I am flexible with time and teaching tools, including calculators and many computer and online tools. Honestly, it was hardest to work with my own two. They made it through university and are employed, on their own and recently married.
