I am a real elementary teacher with many years of experience and a master's degree in elementary education. I design each program based on the child's assessment scores and create individualized activities and assignments to improve specific areas of weakness. A few things about me: We all have a calling in life. Mine is teaching! Before teaching, I used to be a lawyer focusing on child abuse and family law. I quickly realized that I loved helping children but hated the law. This sent me back to school and it was the best decision I ever made. My biggest strength as a tutor and current teacher is my ability to adapt to and match the way each student learns (visual or concrete). A close second would be my ability to help students become independent in their school work rather than constantly feeding them the answers. It goes without saying that I teach solid theory, techniques and study skills as simply and as directly as I can. Here's how I work: Instead of just repeating what your teacher has already gone over in class, I am often able to provide another way of looking at the things. Being a current teacher myself, I can help each child understand why the topic in hand is important, how it fits into the "big picture", and what to watch out for in the future. Subjects: My areas of expertise include but they are not limited to: Reading (comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and phonics), Writing, Grammar, Math, Spelling, Spalding, Science and Social Studies. However, if your subject is not in the list, feel free to contact me regardless, as I tend to be versatile about the subjects I teach. Style: I am strict and hold high expectations of my students. I know how to adapt to meet each student needs. I also draw upon the recent advances in education and psychology as I work to help each student perceive and retain what they are learning more effectively. As we start working together, I will spend the first session doing assessments in the area of weakness. This will help to focus on the main problems in that area. Using that information, I will design a program that is specific to that student. That helps me because it gives me the information I need to assess the situation. I'm pretty good at sensing where a students' problems are. Moreover, at the end of the session and periodically thereafter, I will give you an idea of how things stand and where to go next.
