I'm an
Individual
As a native German speaker, I have 21 years of teaching conversational skills, reading, writing and pragmatic social skills for German and/or English as a Second Language in a variety of settings like pre-Kindergarten (teaching toddlers and pre-Kindergarten children with native speaker immersion strategies) in private homes, corporate training groups for vocational language skill development, public schools (middle and high school levels), community college and university. Currently, I hold teaching certificates for the state of Florida in German, ESOL and ESE. I graduated summa laude with a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of South Florida (USF) in 1995. My training from USF prepared me to apply different language immersion strategies in teaching English as a Second Language that I have also applied during my professional teaching career when teaching German to native English speakers. My language instruction approaches, both in German and in English, are based on current research. For language learners who have already gained intermediate literacy skills and adults who are proficient in their native language, personalized instructions are tailored to meet needs of direct explanations of grammar skills with a compare contrast approach (comparing language components of their mother tongue with those of the second language that they are acquiring). In this way, the affective filter of students can be lowered so that they can feel more at ease interacting with limited second language skills. Some students by nature may initially feel more inhibited in speaking in a second language. Individualized instructions are tailored to observe a silent period (a natural aspect of second languge acquisition) that focuses in on gaining listening skills and then transitioning to the use of speaking skills based upon the comfort level of student. Brief feedback (oral and written communications) will provide the language learner and the instructor with the necessary understanding and monitoring of progress. For beginning and intermediate students of German or English as a Second Language, the main focus will be on gaining skills to communicate effectively whether this communication occurs orally, in writing and/or by reading and interacting an author's text. Methods of indirect error correction and focusing in on categories of common second language acquisition errors/mistakes will be employed to ensure that the confidence of the second language learner increases over time. Fun games, role plays and interactive language tasks will be designed in the interactive lessons to provide ample fun communication opportunities and practice repetition for skill development. The learning experience will be designed to optimize individual learning gains while at the same time providing students with enjoyable, meaningful opportunities to grow learning the skills of a second language.
