Tutor in Hammond, Indiana

I have been a junior high science teacher for 13 years in a low income school (the 2nd worst district in the state, if that gives you an idea of some of the challenges my students face). Motivation is extremely low and it is difficult to get kids to even bring paper and pencils to class, much less complete quality assignments. I have tutored every year ranging from home bound tutoring (for students unable to come to the physical school building) to after school science tutoring to tutoring on the weekends to help my students be successful. As a teacher, my guarantee to my students is that if you regularly come to my tutoring and listen, ask questions and try, you will get at at least a C Even if they are failing. They usually end up with a B, but it depends on how far behind they were and how hard they work. How can I guarantee that to ALL of my students? Because I know the concepts I am teaching and I know how to get junior high kids to understand them, especially if we are in a small group. If they show up and TRY, it's a guarantee they will do well. I have also tutored adults in writing. One man (developmentally impaired) made such significant progress that his caretakers threw an open house for him to display all his artwork and writings. His caretaker said he made more progress with me in organizing and articulating his thoughts than he had his entire life (and we only met once a week during one summer, and then once a month for a year once school started). I am not an easy tutor. I expect if I am giving up my time to tutor someone, he or she needs to come prepared and work hard. Results are what is important. We are both meeting together for a reason. Putting in time does nothing for either the student or myself (other than put a few bucks in my pocket). I bring my best and I require that in return. It is usually clear within 2-3 sessions if we will be a good match. I tutor all subjects K-5, Science, Reading & English 6-8, and Reading & Writing for highschool and adults.
