As a retired teacher in Sacramento, California, it is my passion to instill confidence in students as they learn reading and writing skills. Each one of my lessons is unique since I do not follow a given curriculum, but rather create specific lessons for the immediate needs of each individual student. Only after my students have mastered a skill do I move to the next level and begin on another skill. When I see a weakness in my student's ability to read or write, I teach lessons to develop that particular weakness. In this way, the student truly has a personal coach who is working not just to teach, but to help the student master English skills step by step. After graduating from the university, I took post-graduate courses on how to teach phonics and reading. Now, after decades of teaching reading to students of all ages, I am teaching online lessons to very young students. To my great surprise, even 5-year-olds are learning to read with my online lessons. Recently, I began teaching a 4-year-old (close to 5) who had learned only his A B C's. After only 3 months, he is reading at middle first grade level. Teens who have difficulty in reading fluency or comprehension are also finding my lessons extremely helpful, and they are advancing in reading skills at a remarkable pace. The reading lessons that I have designed teach a wide variety of skills that work together to teach fluent, smooth reading with high comprehension. In addition to teaching reading, my specialty is to teach writing. I have developed a unique method that simplifies the process of writing so much that I have taught many students as young as 6 and 7 to write excellent paragraphs and essays. My primary and middle school students are amazed at their own progress in writing after having learned my writing process. The skills I teach build one upon another, giving students a firm foundation in the steps needed to write in any genre. By teaching students to write notes and turn them into well-developed paragraphs quickly and easily, my students are equipped with the confidence they need to write. The step-by-step process I teach helps students overcome their fear of writing, so they are no longer "frozen" when assigned a writing lesson. After just a few lessons, my students' grades and test scores improve dramatically. All of my lessons are done online, using the ZOOM app, and even though students are tired of online teaching due to the shutdown of classrooms, both my ability to connect with them and my sense of humor keep them engaged in the session and asking for more.
