Horn of Africa Services (HOAS) is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural nonprofit organization offering social and outreach services for the East African communities in Seattle. We serve immigrant and refugee communities from countries such as Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia. Our After School Program (ASP) serves East African youth grades K-12, provides homework help, and writing and math instruction in a supportive and fun environment! Our programs are offered in Seattle Housing Authority low-income housing sites and support over 70 youth in the Greater Seattle area. We are currently seeking three Staff Tutors to join our team in our Southeast Seattle location! RESPONSIBILITIES: • Engage in a mentoring relationship with students, set an example for appropriate behavior and good study habits. • Provide academic assistance to assigned students, either in a group or individually. • Arrive on time and sign in to record hours. • Write a status report for student files at the end of each tutoring session including documenting areas of need for students and successes. • Communicate about absences ahead of time and schedule to make them up as able. • Attend HOAS trainings and orientations. • Attend a bi-weekly meeting with ASP staff to ensure the ongoing success of the program and communicate specific needs of students. • Assist volunteer tutors in providing the best tutoring practices for students. • Communicate effectively with the ASP Program Coordinator and Program Lead about student progress or issues. • Commit to the program from September 2014-June 2015.
