To whom it may concern, I am contacting you because I would like to offer tutoring and classes to homeschooling families. My area of study is British Literature prior to 1800, but I am also familiar with modern American and British literature. I am also available to teach beginning Latin. My name is Cate Rice and I'm an OSU graduate. My major is English Literature with a minor in Medieval and Renaissance studies. I graduated laude, with a 3.625 GPA and a 3.8 within my area of study. I believe that learning to read, comprehend, and write about literature is essential to success in both higher education and life. Knowledge of the classics is, in reality, knowledge of human nature. Classic literature reminds us who we are as humans and what subjects are important to us. These pieces of literature cover topic from love and romance, to liberty and political ideology, to discussions of religion and spirituality. In them we find the best and the worst of humanity. Every author writes with intent and the reader must discover that intent. Through writing the reader interacts across space and time with author, continuing a dialogue that has in some cases continued for centuries. We decide whether to imitate or abhor and authors message and then communicate that in a concrete format. By learning to form arguments centered around literature students learn to argue for thir beliefs elegantly and persuasively. I currently have experience teaching students from eighteen months to eighteen years. My students have been both typically developing children and children with special needs. Throughout college, I've taken jobs in daycare and schools that helped me build my teaching muscles. I currently work in a pre-school preparing children for pre-k and kindergarten. Our goal is to help children develop socially and mentally. I hope to partner with homeschooling parents to create a love of reading and writing in their curriculum. I would love to create a course of study for a semester, or simply help a student prepRe for the ACT or SAT.
