With Regents exams right around the corner and AP exams coming up in May, now is the perfect time for support from a tutor! WHO ARE YOU? You are a parent, guardian, or student who recognizes that a little extra help can go a long way. The student in question is enrolled in a middle school or high school math class (Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB) or is looking for someone to study with for some of the early-year standardized tests (SAT, ACT). Preferably you live in Astoria, but if you are anywhere off of the N or Q lines (as far down as Canal Street), I am willing to travel. I do also have a car to go further east, but that may impact cost a little bit. WHO AM I? I am a NYS Certified (5th through 12th grade) Mathematics Teacher with a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics, and a Master's degree in Education (Mathematics). My undergraduate work was done at Northeastern University in Boston, with my graduate studies done at Dowling College in Oakdale, Long Island NY. I have been tutoring SATs, ACTs, and Mathematics for almost 7 years, and am going strong in my 4th year of teaching high school in Brooklyn. I have classroom and tutoring experience with ALL of the courses that were listed above, and am comfortable teaching any of them. OUR FIRST SESSION: I take pride in building a rapport with my students in the classroom, and as such, I expect to become very familiar with your student as well. After a short meet & greet, where we can start to click and relate, I will ask that the student takes a short (20-30 minute) assessment so that I can best understand our starting point. After that, I will have the student explain to me the things that did or did not go well during the assessment, as well as specifics about some of the problems. I very much do not "teach to the test," but rather expect all of my students to at least ATTEMPT to understand the content on a level that may not be as superficial as they are used to. I will finish the session by providing the student with a way to keep effective notes in a mathematics classroom (that I will hold them accountable for, unless their teacher specifically requests a different note-taking system). I find that consistency is crucial in the success of a math student. ADDITIONAL SESSIONS: Moving forward, I would request feedback from the student's teacher as to what they are -going- to learn in the near future. Each session can then be broken down into review of topics that they did not fully grasp, followed by an introduction to a new, related topic. The reason for this is two-fold: It is never my goal to -push- a student beyond what they are capable of, but if you keep trying to play catch up, the snowball effect of mathematics will overtake even the most resilient teenager. The other reason is that I don't want old material dragging a student down. If they can at least RECOGNIZE some of the ideas that the teacher then presents in a classroom setting, it will have been the second time the student sees the work. Then we factor in homework, and the review I do in the next session - your student just went from glancing at a topic once to seeing it FOUR times without much additional work. MY ASKING PRICE: For the service that I am looking to provide your student, I am asking for $100 / hour. What you are paying for with this is a confident TEACHER of mathematics on the high school level, not a part-time tutor. I have a deep understanding of the NYS Regents and its requirements, as I have been grading Regents exams (and have started looking at the Common Core exams) for years. I am also working directly with my department chair to establish a Common Core aligned curriculum for our High School Geometry program, and work closely with my colleagues in all of our offered branches of mathematics. I will have a textbook/textbooks (depending on subject) that we can work out of, as well as worksheets and tests to measure progress. WHAT I NEED FROM YOU: If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me through the craigslist link provided or text me at (631) 938 - MATH. (Yes, I'm THAT cool that I could grab that phone number). That's 631-938-.... Please provide: Name Location Student's Name Area of Study and any questions, comments, or concerns you may have about the experience, and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you so much! I'd wish your students the best of luck, but luck has little to do with ability, and I hope you'll give me the opportunity to work with your student and force the best of their abilities out!
