Hi there! My name is Jared Stepp. I am from Abingdon, VA and hold a B.S. in Biology and Education from Virginia Tech. I have been a teacher of Biology and Chemistry for the past 7 years and more recently I also teach Spanish courses and English as a second language online in Alberta. This online experience has been beneficial in creating engaging and open courses online in many different subjects, not limited to, chemistry, biology, math, English Spanish, world geography, etc...
Over the past seven years, I have dedicated my time to teaching Chemistry and Biology at bilingual international schools in both Guatemala and Bolivia and a boarding school in Massachusetts. I became a confident teacher as I discovered my strengths and my ability to interact and engage my students successfully. Working with diverse cultural backgrounds, I became more aware of the different individual needs of students and the necessity to be flexible in any situation.
As well as teaching in many diverse classroom settings, I have been an academic advisor for high school students to help support them in their learning process. I strive to understand what passions and motivations a student has to better help them reach their academic goals. Whether teaching, coaching or advising, I hope to incite enthusiasm to learn new things.
I strongly believe we all need an environment that is conducive for growth and a space we can safely make mistakes. I am a learner as well. I continue to expand my knowledge by taking languages and courses to better myself from Spanish to teaching methodologies.
