I know how difficult it can be to help a child get ahead in an education system that doesn't adapt to his or her unique learning style. That difficulty can be made even more prominent when learning is inhibited by disabilities and special needs. I find it important for kids to have one-on-one teaching with someone who can adapt to their unique style of learning utilizing tools and activities suited to their understanding and to keep them interested. My name is Starr, and I have been tutoring for several years. My experience includes a range of ages from 5 to 48 and a range of abilities and learning styles including ADHD, learning disabilities, and autism. I also have experience outside of tutoring with a range of other special needs, and am pursuing my B.A in Psychology and Disability Studies. My tutoring style is unique in that I do not recycle my methods and activities, but create an entirely new program for each individual. I work with parents and students to find areas of struggle and areas of excel and interest then amalgamate these to create a unique action plan. This is unlike many tutor programs which often utilize a similar technique, similar criteria, and similar activities for most of their students. I take a very different approach with a student who is active and distracted than I do with a student who is reserved and focused. I also keep my lessons completely adaptable to new interests, new struggles or accomplishments, and new assignments. Parents remain a large part of their child’s progress with weekly updates, constant communication and influence on our lessons.
