Start the New Year out right with proper guidance and direction in improving your child’s skills in both mathematics and sciences. Currently the teaching methodology in the middle school through high school system allows students to either understand concepts on first glance or get left behind while new concepts pile up, which often leads to discouragement, and fear of failure. In order to succeed at the college level a good foundation of not only mathematics and science, but problem solving, and critical thinking skills are also needed. These skills are often left outside the classroom, and forced upon the students to develop them on their own accord. Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Brandon Cardenas, and I am a senior level Biomedical engineering student graduating spring 2015 with over 4 years of tutoring experience which included standardized test preparation for ACT ,SAT, and FCAT. I have worked in top tutoring companies, as well as the tutoring facilities at Florida international University. I currently have a vast knowledge in both mathematics, and the sciences up to the college level. Being a senior level engineering student, I have been pushed through the rigorous courses, and taught various problem solving strategies, which should have been taught at the middle through high school level. My tutoring approach is slow and methodical. I find that it generally takes two to three 2-hour tutoring sessions to cover one class lecture’s worth of material. Why does it take so much time? 1. Students generally come to me because they have been unable to learn the material satisfactorily in the class room setting, and from their text book. The key reason is that lectures, and text books only provide a brief overview of the topic, while most students require a slow systematic presentation of each concept, and problem solving techniques to go along with it. Followed by constant practice, and preparation which takes a lot of time. 2. My goal for academic tutoring is to help the student increase his current grade in the course by assisting the student in fully understanding, and mastering the concepts. My methods do not offer a quick fix or mechanical “tricks” which will allow students to memorize or fake their way to a higher grade. Thus the tutoring takes a lot of time because mastery takes a vast amount of time. I will never rush to make sure we cover all of the course topics; instead I will alter my pace and continue to focus on the underlying goal which is complete understanding and mastery of the topic, as opposed to rushing to provide brief understanding, which can be forgotten quickly and easily. In conclusion I am able to assist in all aspect of mathematics, and science, from standardized middle/highschool exams such as SAT, ACT, and FCAT prep to regular homework assignments. I charge by the hour, not by the person , which ultimately means that students can split the $35/hr fee amongst themselves. I do not tutor more than three students at a time.
