Who am I? My name is Cortney and I am a recent graduate of Pomona College, where I majored in Sociology. I love working with people, and I especially enjoy helping guide others through their educational endeavors. My areas of focus are English, Reading and Writing, skills I practice religiously everyday. However, thanks to my BA, in which I studied a variety of classes, I am comfortable with many subjects, including K-12 Math, History, Chemistry and Biology. What makes me a qualified tutor? After my sophomore year of college, I taught in a summer program where I created lesson plans for 7th grade biology students and 9th grade college skills students. I worked with small groups, and really valued forming connections with students in order to help them achieve their goals. In addition, I volunteered as a mentor and coordinator for two years in a program called the Weekly Writing Workshop. In 3W, I developed and implemented lesson plans for 7th-9th grade students. The lessons were about how to engage with various forms of creative writing. I paid equal attention to helping students develop grammar and technical writing skills. What I enjoyed most was the positive energy from the students and it was rewarding to see them use the tools they were taught in order to share their stories. I really look forward to continuing my career in education. I will be returning to school in 2016 to earn my California teaching credential and my Master's in Education.
