I'm an
Individual
I can understand how a student might feel when having difficulties in a subject, and will be able to help with this concern, because I struggled through school myself. In fact I had to take an extra year of high school, and had to take remedial classes when I first attended Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT). After 2 years I dropped out because of my lack of math and study skills, and I had no hope of ever finishing college. Everything changed and I enrolled at Kenai Peninsula Community College, volunteered as a charter member of the Student Tutor Education Program, and received education credit as a programming tutor, and earned my Associate of Applied Science. Also, I further helped students in the role of lab aide / teaching assistant for various computer classes. I returned to OIT and earned my Bachelors of Science in Software Engineering Technology (SET). While working as a lab aide / teaching assistant in various lab classes, I began to like and do well at math, so I took all the extra classes I could. When the tutoring center coordinator asked me to work there I began helping fellow students with math as well as programming. I enjoyed helping students of varying ages, and with varying degrees of abilities, including a 7th grader having difficulties in Algebra, and seeing the same light that had come on for me come on for them, when they “got it,” so after graduating, I continued as a tutor and also began teaching math and programming. I was awarded the College Reading and Learning Association's International Tutor Program of Certification, while tutoring at Bellevue College, where I also taught Java and C# computer programming. I also taught programming, tutored math, and substituted at Bellevue Christian School, during which I also tutored math and programming at UW-Bothell. As well, I subbed at King's High school, and taught and tutored math and programming at Lake Washington Technical College. Today I still very much enjoy tutoring, and as a lifelong learner I look for ways to increase my knowledge and experience, and to learn more about the various aspects of the education process.
