Tutor in Millcreek, Utah
Gordon has been a classroom teacher for over 26 years with experience in AP English Lit, writing, struggling readers, religious education, humanities, and drama.
He has been a faculty consultant for the College Board scoring essays, is a state liaison with the Conference kn English Leadership, and a participant in Writing Hope Works, which helps young writers set goals, learn strategies, and achieve independence. He especially enjoys authors who make us think about social justice and who make us think critically about our own world.
He is able to discuss novels, short fiction, poetry, drama, and film. He is always interested in what students have to say, and uses a learner's own ideas in helping improve writing, speaking, and thinking about many topics, including texts. He helps with test preparation, but mainly wants to help a reader or writer of any age to enjoy books and to say something interesting about them in writing (and conversation).
His favorite test is an oral exam where the student chooses from a selection of texts, asks an authentic question, prepares some initial thoughts in writing about the text; then both tutor and student enter a conversation to try to answer the difficult question - and they both end up learning about the text, about reading, and about life.
He believes good writing is not used mainly to teach a lesson, but is an object of beauty to be discovered and admired, and only by spending time with it will a good book, poem, or play be well understood; and every time we read it, it shows us a new side.
If you are interested in learning for learning's sake, Gordon is the tutor for you.
