Music Theory, Jazz Theory Tutor Who Needs Music Theory? Anyone who plans to attend a music program (high school, college, workshop, etc.) needs a certain amount of music theory. This is expected PRIOR to enrolling in your first semester of music courses in college. In fact, many music schools require you to pass a theory examination as part of your audition. Once you are accepted as a music student, you are required to pass four (4) semesters of music theory for a total of twelve (12) credits. Theory is one of the most difficult courses for many music students, primarily because they are not prepared. Topics Colleges expect you to understand these music theory topics BEFORE you begin as a Music Student: The Basics, Rhythm & Meter, Scales & Key Signatures, Intervals, Chords. Having a good grasp of these topics will ensure you get a good start in all music courses whether you are in high school, studying privately, in college, at a workshop, or the like.
