Hello! My name is Rob Nicol. I am a professional tutor who has personally helped over a hundred high school students prepare for and conquer the SAT and ACT in the past five years. I develop custom programs for each student, providing them with the tools they need to maximize their individual scores on the ACT and SAT exams. While each program is tailored to the individual, all students gain exposure to specific skills on each section of the SAT and ACT and broader test strategies that apply to one or more sections. The math program primarily focuses on how to simplify problems in a variety of contexts. Content review includes geometry and algebra, with an emphasis on linear equations, proportions, and elementary functions. The reading comprehension strategy centers on identifying a main idea in each passage, giving students a foundation to understand details. This technique applies to the ACT Science section as well, which includes analysis of graphs and charts. For the language sections, students review the most common grammar errors as they occur in a piece of writing. Also discussed are approaches to the essay portion of each exam, which differ between the ACT and SAT. These review and strategy sessions are broken up among a 10-week course, alternating between test sections each meeting to encourage repetition of skills. Practice materials are supplemented by up to three full-length exams, which prepare students for the timing and pacing of the test. While I recommend that students prepare for both exams, I can accommodate students wishing to focus on only the SAT or ACT. In addition to tutoring, I taught high school math at Vermont Academy for the past three years and served as a tutor in the school's Writing Center. I have experience working with students of all learning styles and abilities, including students with executive functioning difficulties, ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences. I can coordinate with schools to apply for extended time when applicable. My rate is $120/hour for one-on-one tutoring. This includes all materials and supplements. Each session is 1.5 hours. Compare to major tutoring companies and you will find that this beats their price, while providing equivalent or better quality services.
