Tutor in Denver, Colorado

I am an upper elementary school teacher in the Denver area. I teach all subjects, and specialize in mathematics, in particular. I currently hold a professional teaching license, and have a current teachers' background/fingerprint check on file with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. I prefer to meet at public libraries, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, or the Denver Botanic Gardens. (I am happy to provide free admission for up to three additional family members, so you may stay entertained during and after your learner's tutoring session!) I work best with students between the ages of 6 and 13. Our initial visit will be exploratory in nature, and is designed to pinpoint "gaps" in the student's understanding. With below-level pupils, I often find that it is necessary to initially back-up into previous years of instruction, in order to patch a flawed foundation of understanding, before accelerating toward grade-level competency. With on-level learners, we can have an exciting time reinforcing skills and looking into next year's topics, to ensure an advanced level of performance. All of my pupils will also receive a membership to an award-winning mathematics website which is designed to be targeted, track-able, and fun! When a student develops a strong, concrete understanding of how mathematics work, rather than just knowing a collection of tricks they use to find the correct answer, their ability to problem solve and improvise is greatly increased. This skill set is crucial for addressing the new multi-step, constructed-response standards of the Common Core and PARCC assessments, as well as real-world applications throughout their life. Depending on their initial proficiency and personal level of commitment, I routinely experience rapid growth and increased confidence. Your student can expect a little bit of engaging practice assignments between our sessions, but nothing that is going to steal their whole precious summer break. $40 per hour.
